This is seriously creepy. We have a reservoir around here that they created by flooding a small town and submerging it. Urban legends all over the place.

The Tragedy behind The Reschen Reservoir 1949/50
For the sake of power generation, the villages of Graun and partly Reschen plus the ancient hamlets of Alrund, Piz, Gorf and Stockerhofe (St.Valentin) were extinguished by flooding the whole valley.
A huge reservoir of 677 hectares (6.77 million square meters) violently drowned a thousand year history settlement as the unique cultural and natural landscape of the plateau neighbouring the Reschen mountain pass.
In 1939 the facist gouvernment had made a vital change to a first Italian project of 1920 that suggested damming up the two natural lakes Mittersee and Reschensee by 5 meters: both lakes were now dammed up by 22 meters - a plus of 17 meters!
For the sake of "enforcing the national industry" the inhabitants of all villages and hamlets were forced to move away without receiving any indemnification or reparations whatsoever from the gouvernment.
The second World War delayed construction until the war was over. The operating company's financial problems were then cushined by Swiss sponsors. Thus the first winter electricity of 1949 had to be delivered to Switzerland as a capital repayment.
South Tyrol and the communities concerned were at a complete loss. Due to the facist regime the local communities could not provide any people's representatives from 1923 to 1952, thus lacking the support they desperately needed.( The country of South Tyrol did not have an elected gouvernment until as late as 1948).
By the summer of 1950 every single building had been destroyed and flooded. The villagers had either been forced to emigrate or move to barracks provided for a period of two years. The 14th Century romanesque church tower was left standing and later declared as a listed building.
In the years after 1973 the Gouvernment of South Tyrol carried out extensive redeveloppment projects. Roughly 35 hectars (35 000 square meters) of arable land have been regained from material out of the reservoir

THE TRAGEDY IN FIGURES:
70% of the population were forced to emigrate or move away
181 houses and farms were destroyed
514 hectares (5.14 million square meters) of cultivable land were lost
70% less domestic animals"
You can read this facts on the scale model of the Reschen lake on the side of the parking place.

I was just going to comment on how that came to be. I live on a manmade lake, much smaller scale and no where near as terrible.

You can see the foundations of houses/homes and the church foundation closer to the dam. The Church was moved, before the area was filled. It sits just outside the gates to the lake.
If you have real good "fish finders" you can actually "see" the areas and hills that were filled. We had a big drought a couple years back. You could see some roads and once covered foundations. I wish I had a camera then! Totally amazing!

That is totally awesome that you got to see that place. >u< There's a "ghost town" not too far of a drive from here, and Princeton Castle...I will have to travel to those places to take photos.

We also have a hotel that is supposedly haunted. I've been to there a couple times for dinner...but I'd rather not find out if it is true or not. LOL (*big scarebaby*)

I have been there in winter some years ago and because the water in the lake was low in level you could walk around those ruins. I have photos (unfortunately bad quality ) The tower was then in a separate side bassin .

It reminds me of Race Rock Lighthouse, I think its name was, an old haunted lighthouse from Ghost Hunters Season 1, Episode 4. Ancient, little and surrounded by water. Very nice shot! :)
